- Director Guy Ritchie's plans to make a Sherlock Holmes sequel may be in jeopardy after actor Robert Downey Jr., who plays the detective, made a joke during an interview with David Letterman saying that his character was 'a very butch homosexual'.

Executors of the literary estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, have threatened to withdraw any rights Guy Ritchie may have to the Sherlock Holmes story if he is planning to suggest a romance between Holmes and his faithful sidekick Watson in a sequel to the box-office hit.

Problems for Ritchie started when Robert Downey Jr. mentioned to talk show host David Letterman that his character was 'a very butch homosexual'. These comments didn't go down well with Andrea Plunket, who holds the US copyright to Sherlock Holmes.

She told Total Film that she hopes that the comment made was just an example of Downey's black sense of humour. She said: "it would be drastic but I would withdraw permission if they feel that is a theme they wish to bring out in the future." Plunket further said: "I am not hostile to homosexuals, but I am to anyone who is not true to the spirit of the books."

Robert Downey Jr. already spoke about an implied 'bromance' between the detective and Watson (played by Jude Law) before by saying: "I think the word bromance is so passe. We are two men who happen to be roommates who wrestle a lot and share a bed."
